Though January is the literal start of the year and a time for new beginnings, it is in September that the rubber hits the road in the business world. Over the past week I could feel the difference when visiting clients in our Calgary office. There is a sense of excitement, anticipation and in some cases, worry. The decisions you make in September can make or break your opportunity for profitability in 2014. What direction are you taking the company? Who are you going to hire?
Whether setting personal goals or company goals the same philosophy applies. We must have a clear vision for what we are trying to achieve and in order to execute the vision we need to leverage our strengths. When we leverage our strengths we can see the correlation between the activities we do and our desired goals. We become engaged, productive and even more purposeful… we become focused.
This next year is going to create some very unique challenges; the impact of aging demographics will really start to take its toll on the skilled workforce. Even if we see the jobless rate increase slightly we will continue to see the pool of skilled workers decrease. Employers will need to get as far ahead of the curve as possible; those that do will find success much easier. This is going to be a great year to be an employer or employee as there will be many great opportunities for you. So in a sense “Happy New Year” it’s going to be an interesting ride.
